Old recipes - repackaged

This is the name of a small group that meets regularly once a month in the old school.

Did you know that rowan berries are edible? Or that onion marmalade is quite delicious? And served with scrumptious cheese waffles – a true delight.

Around 15 women gather on the last Tuesday of every month to explore such culinary delights and old recipes. Guided by three "older" women from Seelbach, they try out old and new recipes, uncover old secrets and customs, and exchange stories about the past with younger women.

Cooking with parsnips, pumpkin or Jerusalem artichokes.

Preparing calendula ointment or dandelion jelly. Long-forgotten herbs and ingredients in the kitchen are rediscovered.

Bath salts for well-being and pine needle syrup are being tested.

Once a year, a special evening or afternoon takes place. Recently, for example, there was no "food" of the usual kind, but rather "reading food".

An employee from the castle bookstore entertained us in a special way and presented us with reading material for the summer. Refreshments were also provided. A small snack kept everyone happy.

Joachim Heimann told us about the history of the old school and showed us pictures of the fibula found in Seelbach many years ago. A special treasure, currently kept in a safe in Herborn, it will soon be loaned to the State Museum in Bonn. We're not only creative in the kitchen, but also when it comes to making wreaths or Christmas decorations. We usually conjure up unique ornaments from natural materials. And the question always comes up: "How did you do that back then?"

The senior women on the team can answer that.

And the younger ones like to listen.
