Fields of activity

What does the association do and what do the members do?

The purpose of the local history society, as stated in its statutes, is to promote local heritage and history. Specifically, this means:

Source and family research, field name research, local language (Plattdeutsch)

The active members of the association research archives, libraries, museums, private collections, etc., seeking new insights into Seelbach's past. Oral sources are also consulted and analyzed through interviews, surveys, and conversations. Church registers and other old documents are used for genealogical research. The results include family trees and family histories. Information is gladly provided to interested individuals. The preservation and cultivation of the local dialect (Platt) and old field names are of paramount importance.

Publication of a newsletter

Since 1987, at least one newsletter – the Heimatnachrichten (local history newsletter) – has been published annually. It contains the results of source and family research, as well as reports on club activities and special events, current announcements, reminiscences, etc.

Operation of the local history museum and care of the historical collections

Active members of the association preserve, manage, and maintain existing historical objects from Seelbach and the surrounding area. Since the museum's space is limited, offered or discovered collectibles are carefully selected and added to the collections. Sometimes items must be declined, and sometimes objects must be removed. The museum is open on selected days.

Photo and archive documentation

In addition to the objects in the museum, the association maintains an extensive collection of old photographs, paintings, drawings, and plans. New items are frequently found or offered for sale online, in private collections, at auctions, in antique shops, at flea markets, etc. Reproductions are often made, quality standards must be maintained, and everything must be stored in a way that prevents long-term damage. Adherence to copyright law is of particular importance.

Lectures, exhibitions, excursions

Whenever possible, the association organizes an annual exhibition on a local historical topic. Historical lectures are offered periodically. To see what other local history societies are doing and to broaden horizons, excursions to historical sites, museums, etc., are offered.

Hiking and socializing

The association's mission extends beyond simply researching the village's past; it also includes maintaining a close connection to the surrounding nature and landscape, encompassing fields, forests, and meadows. Regular hikes are organized, often in conjunction with other associations. And, of course, the association also fosters a sense of community through social gatherings, lively discussions among members and guests about local history and heritage. Highlights include traditional village festivals and boundary walks.
